Eduroam (Education Roaming) è un servizio che offre un accesso wireless sicuro alla rete. Gli utenti roaming che visitano un Istituto che aderisce all’iniziativa sono in grado di utilizzare la rete locale wireless (WLAN) usando le stesse credenziali (username e password) che userebbero nella propria istituzione di appartenenza, senza la necessità di ulteriori formalità presso l’istituto ospitante. Eduroam si è sviluppata velocemente in tutta la comunità di ricerca e didattica in tutto il mondo.

Il servizio eduroam è un servizio confederato, fornito grazie alla collaborazione di 36 federazioni nazionali. Queste federazioni coinvolgono centinaia di Università ed Istituti, la maggior parte dei quali gestisce autonomamente la propria infrastruttura di servizio.

La Federazione italiana è coordinata dal Consortium GARR, che la rappresenta presso le altre federazioni e confederazioni. Lo scopo della Federazione Italiana Eduroam è di facilitare l'accesso alla rete GARR ed alle altre reti ad essa connesse agli utenti mobili(roaming users) delle organizzazioni partecipanti (servizio Eduroam).

Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.

Eduroam for Italy is coordinated by the Consortium GARR. All universities and research centers accepted the membership rules of the federation and its basic principles, which are: 1) To offer its users wich are located with other participating organizations, wireless access to the network infrastructure of the host organization, using the logon credentials used by your membership organization; 2) Ensure protection of credentials and data between roaming user.

Access to the Italian Federation Eduroam is reserved exclusively for institutions associated with the GARR. Eduroam Italian Federation is a member of the European Confederation Eduroam. The aim of the European Confederation Eduroam is to extend internationally the services provided by the national federations, with rules of use as homogeneous as possible, consistent with the differences imposed by national legislation.
